Conformation Events

Conformation events are a large part of the activities of the Southern California Beagle Club.  Over 95% of our members are or have been active in conformation at some time.  Although the club only holds two specialty shows each year our members also exhibit in a number of other shows as well.  The high level of participation of our members leads us to hold a number of activities in conjunction with the local all-breed shows as well, these include numerous potlucks and occasional fun matches.

Our members currently include owners and breeders of numerous top winning beagles.  Some of our members have been involved with dogs that have been awarded Best in Show, Best in Specialty Show, many group wins and a large number of top nationally ranked specials of both varieties.  Although many of our members have been in the sport for

some time we also have a fair number of members that have been in the sport for less than 5 years.

In order to be competitive in conformation you must be showing a dog that closely meets the AKC standard.  Conformation is not a beauty contest.  That said some people wonder how different dogs win on different days.  This can be attributed to the fact that each judge must interpret the standard for themselves.  This leads to personal differences in interpretation and in judging.  Besides what fun would it be if the same dog always won?

Many of our members choose to show their dogs themselves, others opt to hire professional handlers to take their dogs into the ring.  Regardless of who is showing the dog it is important that the dog be well groomed and shown to minimize any faults the dog may have.  If you are considering showing your dog for the first time, go to a dog show, find a mentor, read all you can on grooming and showing, and most importantly have fun.  Always remember that regardless of what color ribbon you go home with, your dog is always best in show at home.
